Last and first? One and the same. Old and young? One and the same. That's my attempt to make some kind of sense of this verse anyway. It makes sense to me. All of us are equal. In Buddhism this can be seen in the fact that we all have Buddha nature. We are all capable of becoming Buddhas. Moreover the liberation of all sentient beings is the goal. Not just those sentient beings we happen to like. Also, there is an idea in Buddhism that all sentient beings were once my mother or close friend. So we should have compassion and love for everyone equally, just as though they were our mother.
